July TBR

June has been such a busy month that I wasn’t sure if I would get all of my books read but I’m happy to say that I did it! I will be posting reviews of the books soon over on my new site which I am happy to say is almost finished. The only book that I didn’t read in it’s entirety was Before I fall. I couldn’t seem to get into the story and my cousin had wanted it back so instead of trying to muscle along at one page a day, I gave up and called it quits.

Anyways, on to my to be read pile for the month of July. (Blurb’s are from Goodreads.)

Lover Unleashed

By: J.R. Ward

Payne, twin sister of Vishous, is cut from the same dark, warrior cloth as her brother: A fighter by nature, and a maverick when it comes to the traditional role of Chosen females, there is no place for her on the Far Side… and no role for her on the front lines of the war, either.

When she suffers a paralyzing injury, human surgeon Dr. Manuel Manello is called in to treat her as only he can—and he soon gets sucked into her dangerous, secret world. Although he never before believed in things that go bump in the night—like vampires—he finds himself more than willing to be seduced by the powerful female who marks both his body and his soul.

As the two find so much more than an erotic connection, the human and vampire worlds collide… just as a centuries old score catches up with Payne and puts both her love and her life in deadly jeopardy

Divergent

By: Veronica Roth

In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

By: Ransom Riggs

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of curious photographs.

A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.

I am hoping to have Miss Peregrine’s done by the end of July and hopefully before that. However, I am reading it to my son who can only seem to sit still long enough for one chapter (if that), so it may take us longer, although he needs 40 books read by the end of summer. Oh, well! So far it’s a good story and I am enjoying the mother/son time! I will be posting my bimonthly goals in the next few days as well as updates on the new site so keep your eyes open and don’t forget to sign up for my newsletter!

So Summer Begins…

So Summer Begins…

18699878_10154872196778227_5915338784057508267_n

So summer has officially begun for my household today and let’s just say the month of June will be a busy start for us. School is getting out today and we have family arriving later this evening and staying with us for two weeks. I’m excited for this because we haven’t seen them in nearly two years and Montana is just too far away to visit more. We have carnivals and parades (the whole family volunteers for a local non-profit organization that runs a haunted path in October.) We’ve also got a wedding in three weeks that my son is a part of and my grandmother coming up to visit from Texas for a week. Talk about a busy start! Not to mention what will be happening the rest of summer!

18839254_10154894742703227_7399554798670403341_n

My son and I have signed up for the reading challenges at our local library as well. His goal is to read 40 books by the end of summer which I know he can easily do but with everything going on it will be a bit more difficult to get reading time in. I do have to comment that the Adult reading challenge is going to be extremely fun for me. We do Reading Bingo. Each square has a different theme for a type of book and as you read that type then you check it off. Once you get a Bingo, you turn it in for the next Bingo card and you get entered into a drawing for prizes at the end of summer. I’m pretty stoked about it and some of the squares on the first board are interesting. I’ve already got one checked off and no, it’s not the free square.

I’ve been working on the new website a lot lately. I was hoping to have it up last month but that didn’t quite happen so now I am trying to get it finished before the end of this month. I’ve also been editing my first novel. I haven’t fully decided on a title (kind of a pantser over here) but right now it’s called Savior. I’m on the third draft right now and thinking maybe one more round of edits and it might be ready for Beta Readers and possibly Critique Partners. I haven’t decided which order is going to work best for me, yet, but if you haven’t signed up for my newsletter yet, you can do so here.

Anyway, there is a quick update and I might not post as much this month due to how busy I am this month but I am trying to get the new website going soon!

June TBR

I plan to do this on the new site once it is up and functional, so I figured I might as well start it out here. This will give you an idea of what to expect for reviews coming up and kind of give you an idea of some of the books I am in to.

Oh and the blurbs are courtesy of Goodreads!

The Alpha Drive

By: Kristen Martin

It’s the year 2055 and an anarchist organization has taken control with the aim to create a world-class society. Half of humankind is unknowingly living in an alternate reality called Dormance . . . and there are no plans to wake them up.

Sixteen-year-old introvert Emery Parker is one such dormant. An academic scholar who avoids ruffling feathers at all costs, Emery finds herself being transferred to a boarding school on the outskirts of Arizona. Little does she know, a family secret has the power to change the course of the future. When she’s approached with an opportunity to free the dormants, she sees no other choice but to accept, even though failure could mean having her memory wiped clean.

But when tech-savvy Torin Porter reaches out to her from the other side, Emery begins to question everything she was told about Dormance. If her family’s secret falls into the wrong hands, the world as she knows it will be faced with irreversible consequences. Now Emery must play both sides to uncover the truth about her family’s past or risk leaving mankind to live in an unconscious reality.

I’m pretty excited to read this one. I’ve been watching Kristen Martin on YouTube for a few months now and I finally ordered the book! It’s exciting and I love supporting Indie author’s. I’ve found a few amazing books by doing so.

Before I Fall

By: Lauren Oliver

For popular high school senior Samantha Kingston, February 12—”Cupid Day”—should be one big party, a day of valentines and roses and the privileges that come with being at the top of the social pyramid. And it is…until she dies in a terrible accident that night.

However, she still wakes up the next morning. In fact, Sam lives the last day of her life seven times, until she realizes that by making even the slightest changes, she may hold more power than she ever imagined.

My cousin loaned me this book as well as The Shack and I’m excited to read this one. I’ve heard really good things about this book and I’m thrilled that she loaned it to me. I just have a bad habit of focusing on a certain series and then four months later I still have my cousins books. I tried to read The Shack last month but couldn’t seem to get into it even though it sounded amazing and more my style than this one did. I guess my cousin and I just differ on what we like to read.

Lover Eternal

By: J.R. Ward

Within the brotherhood, Rhage is the vampire with the strongest appetites. He’s the best fighter, the quickest to act on his impulses, and the most voracious lover-for inside him burns a ferocious curse cast by the Scribe Virgin. Owned by this dark side, Rhage fears the time when his inner dragon is unleashed, making him a danger to everyone around him.

Mary Luce, a survivor of many hardships is unwittingly thrown into the vampire world and reliant on Rhage’s protection. With a life-threatening curse of her own, Mary is not looking for love. She lost her faith in miracles years ago. But when Rhage’s intense animal attraction turns into something more emotional, he knows that he must make Mary his alone. And while their enemies close in, Mary fights desperately to gain life eternal with the one she loves…

I read Dark Lover last week even though I wasn’t planning to start the series until this month but I just couldn’t wait to read it so now I am on Lover Eternal and I’m actually almost finished with the book and really like it so far. So you can look for this review to come soon as well as the one for Dark Lover!

Of course, since I have started the series, I now have to finish it and since I have like nine of the books, I have to read them until I run out before I can think right again, so,this will be on the list to read this month as well.

Tragedy

Tragedy

FB_IMG_1495054432728I wasn’t sure if I wanted to inform people of where I am from but a huge tragedy hit our area Tuesday night and after posting about it on Instagram and Twitter, I realized the crazy amount of support we have received. I have seen my community come together in such a fantastic way that it makes my eyes fill with tears just thinking about it. I need to share the way we have grown as a community and have leaned on each other in this time of need.

First off, I need to mention that most of these pictures are not mine as mine didn’t turn out. They belong to many of the news outlets in my area as well as a friend of mine on Facebook.

Tuesday evening we had a storm which isn’t anything out of the ordinary for us here in Wisconsin, especially in the spring time. The sirens went off about 5 pm in my town as well as in the surrounding towns that make up our small town community. My children freaked out and were afraid, but I told them there wasn’t anything to worry about as I kept my focus on the news, seeing that the worst of the storm was south of us.

18557125_1410068219031277_9037129459861844148_n

My mom’s town got hit with the outskirts of the worst of it, ending up with flooding in the streets and ping-pong ball sized hail. My four-year old was worried for her Nana so I called her so my daughter could hear and know that Nana was alright. We talked for a while about the storm and what was happening in our cities that are only 15 minutes apart. My dad mentioned the sound outside and how it was weird to him. In all of his 60 years he had never heard such a sound. It was as though there was a train coming through the area, and although my parents live right next to the railroad tracks, there was no train coming that day. I could hear it, too.

As I was watching the news and talking to my mom, I noticed there was what looked like a circle of dark purple and red on the radar the news was showing of the storm. A few minutes later our scanner began to go off. They were calling all emergency personnel to a trailer court about 9 miles south of us. The circle I had seen on the radar was a tornado. We were already under a tornado warning which meant there was a funnel cloud spotted but this was the first time in at least 10 years that one had touched the ground in our area.

The tornado went for roughly 60 miles, wrecking havoc on our area, however, the trailer court got hit the worst. No one had time to prepare and the court is too far away from either of the two closest towns to hear the sirens that had gone off roughly 15 to 20 minutes before. Roughly, 15 trailers were completely demolished and more had damage. People had to be pulled from underneath the rubble and unfortunately, one was killed.

18485728_1489632724420216_4055865788074879436_n

The Red Cross set up a station to help and immediately people were reaching out to others in the community. We want to help. People were volunteering to clean up; to give food, shelter, clothes; offering rides to work or other places; offering daycare so parents can return to work or help clean up the aftermath of the devastation. Businesses have opened their doors and have welcomed those in need of anything to come to their business and access the services for free. We are receiving help from all across the state to rebuild. There’s been celebrities remarking that their thoughts are with us in this area and the support as been incredible.

18447211_1489632604420228_1142714270967811080_n

It warms my heart to see such support. My cousin’s house was hit but thankfully their house was ok. The only damage was to trees and their garage. I want to help and offered to help in any way possible. I have offered rides, daycare, clean up, and plan to offer clothing, toys, and housewares as soon as a list is made. There was so much support and donations given on the first night that the Red Cross had to tell people to stop bringing in donations until they can fully assess the needs of the people who have lost everything.

Recently it has been discovered that there was more than likely either two separate tornadoes that made the 60 mile stretch wrecking havoc or the single tornado was much larger than they had originally thought. They had originally thought it was an EF2 but are now possibly jumping that rating up to an EF3. It has caused nearly $10 million in damage, $100,000 of that to my cousins property alone.

591ba1478bd71.image

The weather has been of no help for clean up lately either. It’s been raining off and on nearly every day and in fact, today is the first day where it has yet to rain. This has added to the problem of trying to clean up and salvage what little bit those affected have left. For instance, my cousin now has a flooded basement with many of their belongings having to be thrown away due to the water damage they have sustained.

18447080_1489633111086844_7073761199135636727_n

The support has warmed my heart and to see the community pull together to help each other has been incredible. We have put aside our differences. We don’t care what color the others skin is, what language they speak, what religion they follow, or about sexual preferences. We don’t care about the prejudices that have been plaguing our nation as of late. All we care about is offering to help those in need in whatever way we can. All we care about is standing strong and supporting each other as we try to rebuild our small community. I am blessed to call this place home for all 27 years of my life. Prayers for Chetek!

Bimonthly Goals May/June 2017

So one thing I plan to start doing on my new site is to start sharing my goals. I am hoping this will help me to achieve them and it also gives you a small look into my life. I already set up my goals a few weeks ago and have already started working on them but I am going to share them with you. Towards the end of June or beginning of July I will update all of you on how I did in completing my goals and give you a look at my goals for the next two months.

I will start with my more professional goals or ones aimed at the blog and my writing.

  1. Start a Newsletter – I am currently working on setting one up and will post more about that later.
  2. Finish my research for new series – I have an idea for an adult paranormal/mythological romance series but there is a lot of research that I  need to complete. I’m not even close to half way done with it, so, hopefully, by the end of June, I will have that finished.
  3. Edit the first draft of Savior – This is the book that I had mentioned before and my editing has not been going good lately. I’m only on chapter 4 of like 30 something chapters.
  4. Finish the new website – I have been working my butt off on this one and I hope it is finished by the end of this month. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
  5. Review ARC of Water & Flame – So I finished reading this and just need to write and post my review. I think you will like this book!
  6. Post on my blog 6 times each month – working on it!
  7. Write more short stories/flash fiction – I want to have enough stories to make a small collection to give out with my newsletter soon so hopefully I can get a few going.
  8. Post on Social Media twice a week – I’ve actually have been posting like three or four times a week lately, so check out my twitter and instagram to stay informed!

Phew! That was a lot! However, I’m not even close to done with all of my goals. Next is my more personal ones.

  1.  Organize the kitchen – We moved into the house in August 2016 and I just kind of tossed stuff in cupboards and its’ a mess! I need to reorganize everything. Plus, my blender is MIA.
  2. Clean everyday – Been doing this for a while but summer is a busy time for us so I need to be reminded to do this.
  3. Read for 30 minutes everyday – I’m actually trying to limit myself on how much I read in a day otherwise I leave no time for other things in my life but this might get bumped up to an hour a day.
  4. Potty training – some of you may know that I have four kids. One of which is 2 1/2 and I’m ready to be done with the whole diaper thing so I want to start potty training her soon.
  5. Exercise 4 times a week – Sitting at my computer for most of the day does not do well for my body and I need to get up and move a bit more.
  6. Organize my Dining Room – The same thing kind of happened with this one as with the kitchen. I just need to do a deep clean of my house, I think.
  7.  Read 2 books a month –  Ok so I always go way over this but I put a low number so I can get into the flow of Summer again and not overwhelm myself. I have already met my goal for this month but I’m not putting pressure on myself to read more than the two which is really nice.

Ok, so those are all my goals for May and June. I’m working hard on completing them and I really hope this helps me to manage my time a bit better. Remember to keep an eye out for news about my new website being launched as well as the newsletter.

What are your goals for this month? I’d love to hear what everyone else is working on!
